SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what’s the difference?

Three acronyms, three ways to get found. Here’s what each one optimizes, and why they’re now complementary — not competing.

What’s the difference between GEO and AEO?

In short: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about being THE answer given by assistants like ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is about being cited as a source among several by generative engines like Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. In other words: AEO optimizes crisp, easy-to-extract answers, while GEO builds your entity’s authority and consistency to earn the citation.

SEO: the foundation

Classic search is still the base: a fast, bot-readable, well-structured site with authority. Without it, neither Google nor the AIs take you seriously. But SEO alone is no longer enough: more and more searches end without a click, the answer given directly.

Example — a plumber in Ottawa wins SEO with a fast mobile site, one page per service, real reviews and local links. That same groundwork is what later lets an AI engine trust and quote them.

AEO: be the answer

Answer Engine Optimization targets assistants that give ONE answer (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini). You optimize to be that answer: natural-language content, explicit Q&A, structured data, snippets that are easy to isolate.

Example — ask ChatGPT “how often should I service my furnace?” — the businesses it paraphrases are the ones whose page answers that exact question in plain language, under a clear heading, with FAQ schema.

GEO: be the source

Generative Engine Optimization targets engines that cite multiple sources (Perplexity, Google AI Overviews). Here what matters: your entity’s authority, the consistency of your information, citations and content freshness.

Example — when Perplexity answers “best CRM for small teams” it cites 4–5 sources. You earn a slot through consistent facts across the web, third-party mentions and fresh, authoritative content — not keywords.

And where does GSO fit?

GSO (Generative Search Optimization) is the umbrella term for everything that makes a site visible in AI-generated search — AEO and GEO included. To keep them straight: SEO = the blue links, AEO = the single answer, GEO = the citation among sources, GSO = the discipline as a whole.

How to optimize for all three at once

The overlap is bigger than the differences. Here’s a short checklist that moves SEO, AEO and GEO together:

Which tool measures all three?

Most SEO tools score only the blue-links half. Tadaaah scores SEO, AEO and GEO together on any URL — and returns the specific fixes for each — so you see all three at once instead of guessing.

So which should you prioritize?

All three. SEO stays the technical foundation; AEO and GEO are what make you visible in AI search — the fastest-growing surface. The good news: many actions (schema, FAQ, clear answers) serve all three at once.
